Located in south-east Australia, Melbourne is the capital city of Victoria, and the second largest city in the country. It is home to over three million people, and extends around Port Phillip Bay and into the surrounding area, covering about 1700 sq kilometres (663 sq miles).
Melbourne is known for it's diversity and multiculturalism, with residents from over 140 nations. It has been described as place of contradictions - cosmopolitan, suburban, cultivated, football crazy, conservative and sophisticated.
Visitors are drawn to Melbourne by the shopping, the restaurants, the nightlife, the art and culture, and of course major sporting events such as the Australian Tennis Open, the Australian Grand Prix, and the Melbourne Cup.
The appeal is not just for visitors, and in October 2002 Melbourne was rated along side Vancouver, Canada as "the best city in the world to call home". (view full article)
